Alabama vs. San Diego State live score, updates, highlights from March Madness Sweet 16 game

Alabama faces another obstacle in its quest for a national title as it takes on San Diego State in the Sweet 16.

The 1-seed Crimson Tide passed their first two NCAA Tournament tests with flying colors, winning by more than 20 points in each matchup. A 96-75 blowout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round was followed up by a comfortable 73-51 victory over Maryland in the second.

After easily advancing to the Sweet 16, Nate Oats and his squad have established themselves as the favorites to lift the trophy this year. The program hasn’t advanced to the Elite Eight since 2004 — and has never made it past that point — but anything less than a Final Four appearance in 2023 will be considered a failure.

On the other side, 5-seed San Diego State is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014 after dispatching College of Charleston and Furman in its first two tournament games. The Aztecs were handed a kind draw early on, but they did well to avoid an upset in the first two rounds.

Alabama vs. San Diego State live updates, highlights from 2023 March Madness

(All times Eastern.)

6:55 p.m. — This has been a foul fest so far. Clowney just picked up his first to make it 11 total fouls (6 on SDSU, 5 on Alabama) within the first 10 minutes of this game.

6:51 p.m. — Micah Parrish buries a three to put the Aztecs back on top, but Rylan Griffen responds from deep at the other end to tie it right back up. With 10:56 left in the first half, it’s tied at 11-11.

6:48 p.m. — Trammell is back on the floor, but he fouls Mark Sears to give Alabama a pair of free throws. Sears makes one of two to tie things up at 8-8.

6:46 p.m. — It has been a sloppy start to this game, and both teams are a combined 6 of 24 from the field so far. The Crimson Tide leads 7-6.

6:43 p.m. — Trammell suffered a left quad contusion, according to courtside reporter Evan Washburn. He’s on an exercise bike trying to stay loose right now and should be able to return. Meanwhile, Miller just picked up his second foul. Not a great start for him in this one, as he’s 0 of 4 from the field so far.

6:36 p.m. — Darrion Trammell hits a pretty turnaround jumper to give the Aztecs the lead, then Lamont Butler gets a steal on Miller and throws an alley-oop to Johnson to keep the momentum with SDSU. It’s 6-3 Aztecs in the early going, but Trammell just limped off with an apparent leg injury. We’ll have to keep an eye on him.

6:33 p.m. — Clowney gets a bucket and a foul to start the evening off with a three-point play. After a few scrappy possessions by both teams, some good offensive rebounding allows Keshad Johnson to get SDSU on the board with a tip-in from close range.

6:31 p.m. — San Diego State has plenty of experience on the floor, with four seniors and a junior in its starting five. Alabama is starting two freshman, Miller and forward Noah Clowney. Tip off is just moments away in this Sweet 16 clash.

6:24 p.m. — In his pregame interview, Oats mentioned the nagging groin injury that has been affecting Brandon Miller. He said Miller wasn’t 100% last weekend, but he’ll be in better shape tonight. “80 percent of Brandon is a pretty good player,” Oats tells Evan Washburn.

6:18 p.m. — As you’d expect, the tale of the tape suggests Alabama is the clear favorite tonight. Led by Brandon Miller and Mark Sears, the Crimson Tide have averaged almost 11 more points per game than the Aztecs, and they have the clear edge in rebounding as well. The keys to the game for SDSU will be playing stifling defense and staying out of foul trouble.

5:53 p.m. — The Aztecs have their work cut out for them tonight. Can they pull off the upset to keep their run alive?

5:47 p.m. — The Crimson Tide has arrived at the KFC Yum! Center. Will Nate Oats and his team take another step towards their ultimate goal tonight?
