For the first time in six years, we’re seeing what Tim Tebow looks like on a football field.
With his Jaguars comeback now beginning in earnest, Tebow is starting to learn the nuances of being a tight end. And it’s safe to say that it will take him some time to learn his new position.
As captured by The Associated Press’ Mark Long, here’s one of Tebow’s reps from Friday’s practice.
Certainly, that’s a … methodical rep from Tebow as he continues to learn the ropes. And per John Reid of the Florida Times-Union, even Jaguars coach Urban Meyer admitted that it was “awkward” seeing him at the tight end spot.
“Oh well, I wouldn’t say weird — awkward maybe, the first practice,” Meyer said. ”But it’s 1 of 90, trying to make the team. He has improved, it’s all new for him, but Tyler Bowen is doing a good job with our tight ends as a whole.”
Still, Meyer isn’t worried about how Tebow looks to start his time in Jacksonville. He wants to see whether the 33-year-old can continue to show improvement at tight end like some of the other players who play the position have.
‘[James] O’Shaughnessy and [Ben] Ellefson in particular, are — if you watch a video [from] last year and if you watch them practice now, it’s night and day; those guys have really improved. Their positions are trending upward,” Meyer said. “They’re doing a nice job. It’s one step at a time. We’ll see what happens. [Tebow’s] one of the 90 trying to make the team.”
Nobody expected that Tebow would come in and be a contributor right away at tight end. Not only has he never played the position, but he hasn’t been on an NFL field since 2015. He spent the past five years playing minor league baseball, so readjusting to the NFL is going to take some time.
But the work he has put in so far is impressing his Jaguars teammates.
”He’s doing what he needs to do to get this new position going,” receiver Marvin Jones Jr. said. ”So, it’s been good. It’s been good to have him here most definitely.”
We’ll see whether Tebow gets any less “awkward” on the field. Either way, at least he seems to fit in well with his teammates.
