“Winning Time” is based on the 2014 book by Jeff Pearlman titled “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.”

The book chronicles the Lakers dynasty, beginning with drafting Magic Johnson with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. That kick-started a dominant run alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and larger-than-life head coach Pat Riley, which saw them win five championships in the ’80s.
