So, a lot has changed… and nearly nothing has changed, at all.
Brady, who is entering the final year of his Buccaneers contract, was also linked to the Miami Dolphins this offseason, both as a player and a potential ownership stake in the NFL franchise.Brady did little to dispel that speculation Thursday, as he danced around questions involving the Dolphins during his availability.
“I had a lot of conversations with a lot of people,” Brady said, per ESPN.
I’ve had for the last three or four years of my career about different opportunities when I’m done playing football so, I kind of made a decision of what I’d like to do, and I’ll get to be in the game of football.
Brady’s reported connection to Miami was seemingly derailed multiple times by now former head coach Brian Flores.
Tom Brady was reportedly the mystery QB target in Dolphins owner Stephen Ross’ alleged tampering scandal, as brought on by Flores’ complaint and lawsuit. Additionally, the Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Brady considered becoming a minority owner for the Dolphins and would have played for the Dolphins if they could have gotten the rights to his contract. That also stalled out in the wake of the Flores fallout.
So, Brady returned to Tampa and all is roughly the same, for now.
Brady, of course, will be in football regardless of what he chooses to do. He has a 10-year contract with Fox Sports worth $375 million on the table for him when he retires, so whether he keeps playing or defers that for another year, he’s not leaving the NFL any time soon.
The legendary quarterback did, however, shift focus back to this season.
“I think for me, the most important thing is where I’m at now and what I hope to do for this team,” he said. “That’s been my commitment to this team and this organization. It’s been so much fun for me to come here two years ago. It’s been almost 2½ now and it’s been an incredible part of my football journey. And it’s not over.”
Brady has already won a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, but he’ll be looking for a second heading into this season. The Buccaneers clearly have the roster talent to do it again. But they’re looking at the Rams and Packers in what will surely be a competitive NFC race.
