Trevor Penning injury update: Saints first-rounder carted off with apparent lower-body injury

A meaningless preseason touchdown could end up having big ramifications for the Saints’ 2022 season.

In the first quarter of New Orleans’ preseason bout with the Chargers on Friday, Mark Ingram capped off a drive with a dive into the end zone. On the back side of the play, tight end Juwan Johnson accidentally speared Saints first-round pick Trevor Penning, who fell to the turf.

After going into the injury tent, Penning was carted off the field for further examination.

Penning, who was taken 19th overall after the Saints took wide receiver Chris Olave with the 11th pick, was drafted to fill the spot of blindside fixture Terron Armstead, who departed for the Dolphins in free agency this offseason.

What is the Saints’ left tackle depth chart?

The Saints traditionally make it a point of emphasis to use a six-man offensive line rotation in the event of an injury.

Penning has been competing with veteran James Hurst for the starting left tackle spot. Hurst is dealing with health issues as well. He was pulled from joint practices with the Packers last week with a foot injury.

After Penning and Hurst, the Saints don’t really have anyone who can fill in at left tackle.

With that in mind, a serious injury to Penning is a serious injury for the team. While the cart is an ominous sign, the preseason is a time for extreme caution by NFL teams.

Penning has developed a reputation for whistle-to-whistle gameplay and a mean streak. His violent blocking style turned a lot of heads at the Senior Bowl and has continued into the NFL, to the point he was feuding with his own teammates in training camp.

The play in which he was injured clearly wasn’t a result of that. It appeared Penning was out of position on a trap play and ended up in the crossfire of a Johnson blindside hit.

The Sporting News will update this story when the extent of Penning’s injury is known.
