It appears he’s also staying within his identity, as he appeared to incite a fight with Malcolm Roach Wednesday, which led to him being kicked out of practice. It’s the third time in as many days Penning has been involved in a fight.
New Saints head coach Dennis Allen seemed to have a bit of an edge in talking about the incident as he talked about it after practice.“We don’t have time for that,” he said when asked, per Mike Triplett.
The other players involved have been J.T. Gray and Scott Pachan. It generally seems to come from Penning blocking after the whistle.
The incident Wednesday wasn’t recorded, as it occurred during a no shooting portion.
Penning entered the NFL with a reputation. Leading up to the draft, he frequently talked about his physicality and what teams can expect from his aggressive nature.
“Playing very nasty is how I believe O-line is meant to be played,” he said at the NFL Draft Combine.
He lived up to that at the Senior Bowl, when he exhibited a lot of the tendencies we’re seeing play out at training camp. Penning had 16 penalties in 2021, which would have tied Tulsa’s Tyler Smith in the Football Bowl Series. He could draw a lot of unnecessary roughness flags.

The difference, of course, is now Penning is playing with his teammates rather than competing with guys he’s trying to get drafted over. With that in mind, it might behoove the rookie to reign it in just a tad moving forward.
