Philadelphia went into the fourth inning of Game 1 in the 2022 World Series down 5-0 to Houston on the road. Thanks in large part to clutch hits by catcher J.T. Realmuto, the Phillies stormed all the way back, tying the game in the fifth inning and then winning it 6-5 on Realmuto’s home run in the 10th.
The win was huge for the Phillies. It means that the Astros will have to win at least one game at Citizens Bank Park to keep their title hopes alive.
But before the World Series heads to Philadelphia, the Astros will host one more game looking to even the best-of-seven. They will send left-hander Framber Valdez to the hill. Valdez pitched to a 2.82 ERA with a 23.5 percent strikeout rate, 8.1 percent walk rate in a team-high 201 1/3 innings in 2022. The Phillies will counter with a standout starter of their own. Zack Wheeler, the 2021 runner-up for NL Cy Young, will take the hill for his fifth postseason start. Wheeler was dominant in the regular season with a 2.82 ERA, a 26.9 percent strikeout rate and a 5.6 percent walk rate.
