Where is Jimmy Garoppolo? How Week 13 injury paved way for Brock Purdy's improbable 49ers playoff run

Where is Jimmy Garoppolo? How Week 13 injury paved way for Brock Purdy's improbable 49ers playoff run

Where, oh, where, did Garoppolo go?

The 49ers finished the 2023 regular season at a 13-4 record, which is astounding when you consider they’ve been riding the quarterback carousel all year.

While Jimmy Garoppolo is certainly a better QB2 than most of the other options across the league, losing two quality starters would put most organizations into the hole. Not Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers, though, who turned to Brock Purdy to keep their season afloat after losing Garoppolo and Trey Lance and still captured the NFC West title.

But as Purdy takes the field for the 49ers’ matchup against the Seahawks on Saturday, a question remains: Where is Jimmy Garoppolo?

Here’s the answer:

Where is Jimmy Garoppolo?

In Week 13, Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a foot injury that was, supposedly, going to keep him out the remainder of the year.

The injury did keep Garoppolo out for the remainder of the regular season, but there’s a chance that Garoppolo could be back on the field if the 49ers make a deep run in the playoffs.

The 49ers got encouraging news surrounding his progress on Jan. 6: Garoppolo is able to put weight on his foot, meaning the 6-to-8 week recovery timeline is still in play. Sunday, Jan. 15 marks the sixth week since Dec. 4, when the injury occurred, which means his window for return could be open.

For now, though, it’s Brock Purdy’s team. We’ll see how long it stays that way if the 49ers make it past the Seahawks on Sunday.

What is Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury?

Garoppolo suffered broken bones in multiple spots in his left foot in San Francisco’s Week 13 matchup with the Dolphins.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo was set to undergo season-ending surgery, but that turned out not to be the case. Doctors feared it was a Lisfranc injury, but that was later ruled out; a Lisfranc injury would have required surgery and Garoppolo would have been out a lot longer.

Garoppolo’s timeline for return was set at 6-to-8 weeks, meaning he should be in the window to return beginning this upcoming Sunday.

Brock Purdy is the 49ers’ third starting quarterback of the 2023 NFL season, and San Francisco likely hopes it stays that way.
